Let Food Be Thy Medicine
Introducing...The Farmacy Initiative
Conceived of by executives from Carlsbad-based company Compound Solutions, a global supplier of nutraceutical products, The Farmacy Initiative is a 501 (c)3 charitable nonprofit with the vision of promoting whole-foods based human nutrition. Incorporated in 2019, the organization’s mission is to inspire and educate children to plant and care for gardens. The Farmacy Initiative develops and builds gardens that are used to educate young people about healthy eating, sustainable agriculture and the environment.
Christopher Burroughs is Horticulture Specialist for the Farmacy Initiative. With a background in wildland firefighting and landscape construction, Chris is a Master Composter and is currently studying toward degrees in sustainable agriculture and environmental sustainability at Mira Costa College. He volunteers at local nonprofit farms and consults with local farmers.
We met Chris in October of 2019 at the San Diego Ag in the Classroom Teacher Resource Fair (a.k.a. the Food and Flower Happy Hour) and invited him to consider working with the Promise Zone schools. Having grown up in Southeast San Diego, he jumped at the chance to give back to one of the most economically disadvantaged communities in the city.
Chris is passionate horticultural advocate and singularly committed to empowering vulnerable children to make healthy choices. Blessed with an infectious enthusiasm, he is effective at bringing together public sector, nonprofits, local businesses and community volunteers to create vibrant outdoor learning spaces for at-risk youth.
Proficient in carpentry and irrigation installation, Chris isn’t just a pro at designing and building garden infrastructure. He is also a gifted grower! The photo below depicts the Perkins K-8 School’s garden just a few weeks after we revamped it earlier in the summer. We are expecting a bountiful harvest at this urban garden and are excited to share fresh fruits and vegetables with the community!
